Strengthening Interfaith Harmony and Law Enforcement Cooperation: A Meeting Between Dr. Zafeer Siddiqui, Muhammad Salman Khan, and Mr. Robin Yamin

By Dr. Zafeer Siddiqui, Vice President of the Central Peace Committee for Interfaith Harmony, Pakistan

On September 14, 2017, a critical meeting took place in Karachi, marking a collaborative effort between key figures in Pakistan’s interfaith dialogue and law enforcement. I, Dr. Zafeer Siddiqui, Vice President of the Central Peace Committee for Interfaith Harmony, along with Muhammad Salman Khan, a notable leader of the Pakistan Youth Organization (PYO) from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), had the honor of meeting with Mr. Robin Yamin, Ex-SSP of the Federal Police and Additional Director of the FIA Sindh South Zone.

The meeting centered on fostering peace and interfaith harmony in Karachi—a city known for its diversity but also for the challenges that arise from its multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The role of law enforcement in maintaining peace, particularly in addressing sectarian tensions and protecting religious minorities, was discussed in depth. Mr. Robin Yamin's extensive experience in law enforcement provided valuable insights into how security agencies can contribute to these efforts.

Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation

As a representative of the Central Peace Committee for Interfaith Harmony, my focus in the meeting was on enhancing interfaith cooperation. We discussed the ongoing efforts of religious scholars and leaders from various faiths in promoting unity, mutual respect, and understanding. I shared the Committee’s mission to create platforms for dialogue between different religious communities and emphasized the importance of these initiatives in preventing conflicts that stem from religious differences.

Mr. Yamin underscored the need for law enforcement agencies to collaborate closely with community leaders. His perspective, shaped by his time with the Federal Police and FIA, highlighted the challenges faced by Karachi's diverse communities, particularly in areas where religious tensions have led to unrest. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of faith, through fair and impartial policing.

Political Engagement and Youth Leadership

Muhammad Salman Khan, as a youth leader of the PPP’s Pakistan Youth Organization, played an integral role in the conversation. His engagement with young people across Karachi provided a crucial understanding of how the city’s youth view issues of interfaith harmony. He stressed the importance of empowering the youth to become ambassadors of peace and tolerance, particularly in neighborhoods that have been hotspots for sectarian violence.

Salman Khan outlined several initiatives aimed at engaging young people in constructive activities that promote unity and diversity. He proposed the establishment of interfaith youth forums, where young leaders from different faiths could come together to share ideas and work on community-building projects. This proposal was met with enthusiasm, as all parties recognized the potential of youth in shaping a peaceful future for Karachi.

Law Enforcement’s Role in Promoting Harmony

A key point of discussion was how law enforcement agencies can actively contribute to interfaith harmony. Mr. Yamin shared examples from his tenure where close cooperation between police officials and community leaders had successfully de-escalated potentially volatile situations. He stressed that a proactive approach, where law enforcement builds trust with religious communities, is essential in preventing conflicts from escalating into violence.

We also discussed the importance of strict enforcement of laws against hate speech, religious discrimination, and hate crimes. Mr. Yamin noted that while laws exist to protect religious minorities, their enforcement must be strengthened to ensure that all citizens feel secure. He advocated for regular training for police officers to sensitively handle cases involving religious and sectarian tensions.

Moving Forward: A Vision for Peace

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from all sides to work together towards a peaceful and harmonious Karachi. Several key initiatives were proposed, including:

1. Community Engagement Programs: Organizing regular forums where religious scholars, youth leaders, and law enforcement officials can engage in dialogue to address issues of interfaith harmony and social cohesion.

2. Youth Empowerment: Developing programs aimed at empowering the youth to become champions of peace and tolerance in their communities, fostering a new generation of leaders committed to interfaith dialogue.

3. Collaborative Policing: Strengthening partnerships between law enforcement agencies and religious communities to prevent sectarian violence and ensure the protection of all citizens.

4. Training for Law Enforcement: Advocating for specialized training programs for police officers in handling interfaith and sectarian disputes with sensitivity and impartiality.

This meeting marked an important step in our collective efforts to create a more inclusive and peaceful society. By engaging religious leaders, youth, and law enforcement, we aim to build a future where all communities, regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds, can coexist in harmony and mutual respect.
